Tangkoko Nature Reserve

The Tangkoko Nature Reserve is a flora and fauna conservation area on Mount Tangkoko in the district of Bitung in the province of North Sulawesi. The reserve is particularly attractive for its unique wildlife that can be observed roaming free in the forest.

From downtown Bitung to Tangkoko Nature Reserve, it takes about 50 minutes covering a distance of 26,9 km. The trip can be taken using a private vehicle such as a car or motorcycle. Alternatively, you can use public transportation such as a pickup truck or motorcycle taxi (ojek), which usually waits at Girian Traditional Market.

This area is rich in biodiversity.

The variety of flora includes:

  • Banyan trees (Ficus spp)

  • Aras (Duabanga moluccana)

  • Nantu (Palaquium obtusifolium)

  • Edelweiss (Anaphalis javanicum)

  • Pitcher plants (Nepenthes gymnamphora)

The fauna includes:

  • Sulawesi black monkeys or yaki (Macaca nigra)

  • Deer (Cervus timorensis)

  • Brown palm civet (Macrogalidia musschenbroeki)

  • Tarsier (Tarsius spectrum)

  • Maleo (Macrocephalon maleo)

  • Hornbill (Rhyticeros cassidix)

  • Bear cuscus (Ailurops ursinus)

  • Sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster)

Unique Fauna

  • Tarsier: The smallest primate in the world, only the size of a fist, makes Tangkoko its last sanctuary and is only found in Sulawesi. The tarsier (Tarsius spectrum) is very cute with its large, plate-like eyes. Locals know them as tangkasi. Since they are nocturnal animals, they can only be observed at night.

  • Crested Black Macaque (Macaca nigra): Endemic to Sulawesi, they usually come in large social groups and can be seen playing, fighting, or grooming each other.

  • Bear Cuscus: A marsupial that can be seen among the trees if you are lucky.

Foreign tourists:

  • Weekdays: Rp. 100,000

  • Weekends: Rp. 150,000

Parking Fees:

  • Motorcycles: Rp. 10,000

  • Cars: Rp. 20,000

Facilities

Around Tangkoko Nature Reserve, there are many homestays if you want to stay overnight, as well as food stalls and minimarkets.
